The aim of this course is to provide the necessary skills and knowledge to sustain life, reduce pain and minimise the consequences of injury or sudden illness until professional help arrives.

This course is delivered and assessed by St John Ambulance.  The St John Ambulance (RTO number: 88041) will issue the certificate upon successful completion of this course.

Course Content
  • DRSABCD Review and Practice
  • Unconscious, breathing person
  • Unconscious, non-breathing person (CPR)
  • Application of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Wound care and bleeding review and practice
  • Choking demonstration and practice
  • Allergies review and Anaphylaxis demonstration and practice
  • Asthma & respiratory distress review and practice
  • Fractures/ sprains/ strains review and practice
  • Envenomation review and practice
  • Seizure management review and practice
 
Assessment

You will be assessed in the use of the following:

  • Bronchodilator (asthma)
  • Auto-injector- Epipen (anaphylaxis)
  • Use of defibrillator


This course includes an assessment in both and adult AND baby mannequins.  Please be aware that for the purposes of assessment you will be required to kneel on the floor to perform CPR on a training mannequin for a minimum of 2 minutes.

A Statement of Attainment is issued for successful completion of this unit for the following units:

  •     HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  •     HLTAID002 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
  •     HLTAID003 Provide First Aid

Entry Requirements

Participants with a language or literacy difficulty or other special needs should inform the training support staff or trainers so that appropriate assistance can be provided.  

Certificate validity

As per the First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice, First Aiders should attend training on a regular basis to refresh their first aid knowledge and skills and to confirm their competence to provide first aid. Refresher training in CPR should be undertaken annually and first aid qualification should be renewed every three years.
