Leading traffic control companies have identified their wish-list of skills and knowledge that they want new recruits to possess, and in collaboration with them, the Traffic Management Association Australia (South Australia) and the Civil Contractors Federation (South Australia), we have designed an innovative and unique program to meet their needs.

Over 75% of our graduates have found work in the traffic management industry following completion of 'The Right Way to Traffic'

What will I get at the end of the course?

Over four weeks, you will be immersed into the world of traffic control.  You will of course get your Work Zone Traffic Management ticket, but in addition you will develop a range of skills that traffic management employers have said they want you to have.

At the end of the course you will have gained the following:

Accredited units:

  • RIIWHS205D Control traffic with stop-slow bat
  • RIIWHS302D Implement traffic management plan
  • RIIRIS201D Conduct local risk control
  • RIICOM201D Communicate in the workplace
  • RIICCM201D Carry out measurements and calculations
  • RIIVEH201D Operate light vehicle
 

Non-accredited modules:

  • Using UHF radios
  • Read plans
  • Hazardous manual tasks
  • Set up and position specialised equipment
 

What activities will i do?

  • work around construction traffic at our live works site
  • learn how to set up traffic management plans on various road set ups
  • learn how to control traffic 
  • learn to liaise with civil contractors (your clients)
  • develop conflict management strategies to deal with the public 
  • undertake shift work to get used to the way the industry works 
  • prepare for night works
  • undertake work experience on a commercial job with a real contractor
  • get access to traffic control employers to learn what the industry is really like
  • access to healthy workers, healthy futures advice from the CCF SA
  • receive structured workplace mentoring, working closely with our specialist Jobs Placement Officer to prepare you for  a traffic management career.
  • access to a support to help you overcome and personal barriers to learning or employment.
 

What will it cost?

For eligible participants, this course is currently available under WorkReady Jobs First Employment Projects and is heavily subsidised.  This means the course fee is reduced to $295 for WorkReady eligible participants, plus you need to be able to get yourself  to and from the place of training/work experience, lunch and refreshments.

Entry requirements:

Civil Train will conduct a short Foundation Skills assessment to determine that you have the level of literacy and numeracy required for the course.  We will also conduct a suitability interview, which may involve an industry representative.

Before you start the course you will also require:

  • PPE
  • A current first aid ticket
  • A current White Card
  • You will be required to hold a current driving licence (minimum P2), and be able to drive a manual vehicle.  The program now has provision for those unskilled in manual transmission to access additional training.
